Year 9 visit to Ypres, Belgium
Uxbridge High School Year 9 students visited Ypres in Belgium to commemorate the centenary of World War One last week. The students have been studying the war in their History lessons and the trip was to both complement their academic work and offer an experience of the topic beyond the classroom.
Uxbridge High School Year 9 students visited Ypres in Belgium to commemorate the centenary of World War One last week. The students have been studying the war in their History lessons and the trip was to both complement their academic work and offer an experience of the topic beyond the classroom.
After an early channel tunnel crossing they arrived in Ypres at lunch time, and immediately went to the moving In Flanders Field Museum. S tudents then went on a walking tour of the town, with a knowledgeable local guide, before attending the poignant Last Post Ceremony in the evening. Here three students laid a wreath as part of the procession on behalf of the school.
The following day was spent with a guide visiting a variety of significant sites, including a British and German cemetery and numerous war memorials, before students got to experience trenches at Hill 62.
Students found the visit stimulating and learnt a lot from being able to visit first hand. Sophie Coole, George Brookfield, and Ben Clarke were the three students who laid the wreath at the Last Post Ceremony.
